Sediment plume management for offshore discharge flows

A controlled intervention before release, designed to improve settling behaviour and reduce the drift potential of fine suspended sediments.

WHY SEAFLOX WAS DEVELOPED

SeaFLOX was developed to address a specific gap in how sediment discharge is managed offshore.

Existing measures at the discharge point are largely passive. They can reduce the momentum or spread of a flow, and monitoring can show where a plume travels, but neither actively changes how the suspended sediment itself behaves once released.

SeaFLOX moves part of that control upstream. By conditioning sediment laden flows before release, it improves settling behaviour and reduces plume persistence, with the conditioning level set by the operator to match the discharge.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

Bigger aggregates → faster settling → shorter transport distance → smaller affected area

SeaFLOX conditions sediment laden flows so that fine, drift prone particles form larger, faster settling aggregates before release, concentrating settling closer to the discharge point.

ONE PRINCIPLE, MULTIPLE DEPLOYMENT ROUTES

SeaFLOX can be adapted to different offshore discharge configurations depending on release depth, flow routing and system integration constraints.

VESSEL-BASED PACKAGE

Deck-mounted, retrofit or launch-and-recovery configuration for vessel or barge discharge operations.

MID-WATER CONFIGURATION

Integrated into suspended or riser-associated discharge routes where the release point is below the surface.

SEABED MODULE

Anchored or skid-based configuration for near-bottom discharge.

APPLICATION CONTEXTS

SeaFLOX is relevant to sediment-laden return-water flows, dredging overflow, marine construction discharge and offshore fine-sediment water streams.

AS A PLATFORM TECHNOLOGY, THE SAME CONDITIONING PRINCIPLE CAN BE ADAPTED ACROSS DIFFERENT OFFSHORE DISCHARGE CONTEXTS.

DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

SeaFLOX is in active development, with aggregation behaviour validated under controlled laboratory conditions and a representative prototype validation pathway defined.

As offshore operations face tighter expectations on discharge, predictability becomes an operational advantage. SeaFLOX is being developed to give operators a controllable settling envelope, turning a source of variability and risk into something that can be managed by design.
